Abilities in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire are special features that either give a character a new capability, or improve one that he or she already has. Abilities are almost always class-specific, but there are few of them available for several classes. A character gains access to different abilities when reaches an appropriate Power Level. Abilities can be Passive, Active or Modal. (For casters, spells count as abilities.)
An Active talent or ability is one which the player must choose to use in combat. For example, a fighter who has Knock Down must select the Knock Down icon from the action bar and select a target for the ability. Using Active Ability spends a certain amount of character's Power Pool.
A Passive Ability can be chosen at character's level-up and the bonus gained from it is applied automatically. For example, a character with Snake's Reflexes gains their bonus to Reflex saves automatically.
A Modal Ability is one that causes a effects to occur continuously while it is active. For example, a paladin's zealous auras grant bonuses to everyone near them for as long as they are active. Modal Abilities are often grouped so that only one modal ability in a category can be active at any given time. These groupings are reflected by how the Abilities are organized on the action bar. You can switch between Modal Abilities from the same group during battle with a slight cooldown.
