Recovery

Recovery is the amount of time that a character spends between actions. Most actions will cause a character to enter a brief Recovery afterward, though some may have shorter or even no Recovery time. Armor has a large effect on Recovery. Generally, heavier armor inflicts longer Recovery penalties.

Recovery is a stat in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire

Recovery is the amount of time that a character spends between actions. Most actions will cause a character to enter a brief Recovery afterward, though some may have shorter or even no Recovery time. Armor has a large effect on Recovery. Generally, heavier armor inflicts longer Recovery penalties.

Calculating final recovery time

The game generally displays recovery in the time domain. For example a weapon might have 5.0 sec recovery, or a modal ability might give -50% recovery time. However the game calculates recovery in the speed domain. More specifically the game converts each recovery time increase/decrease to the speed domain before adding them all together so that recovery speed stacks additively. The formulas for converting from recovery time to recovery speed are different for a recovery time increase and decrease:

  Converting a displayed Recovery Time percentage to a Recovery Speed percentage
For increases in recovery time S = - T
For decreases in recovery time S = 100% / ( 100% + T ) - 100%

Where S is recovery speed percentage and T is recovery time percentage.

So for example if a character is wearing a Brigandine which has Recovery Time: +55% the recovery speed can be calculated using the formula for a recovery time increase:

S = -T = -55%

If a character is using the Rapid Shot Modal ability which has -50% Recovery Time the recovery speed can be calculated using the formula for a recovery time decrease:

S = 100% / ( 100% + T ) - 100% = 100% / ( 100% + -50% ) - 100% = 100%

A character with both of these effects would then have a total recovery speed percentage of:

-55% + 100% = 45%

The game then looks at the total recovery speed percentage and will calculate the final recovery time differently depending on whether the sum is positive/zero or negative. The formulas are:

For positive/zero ST Final Recovery Time = B / (100% + ST)
For negative ST Final Recovery Time = B * (100% - ST)

Where ST is the total recovery speed percentage and B is base weapon recovery time.

So for example a character using a Hunting Bow which has a base weapon recovery of "4.0 sec" with Rapid Shot active and wearing a Brigandine, would use the formula for positive recovery speed and get a final recovery time of:

Final Recovery Time = B / (100% + ST) = 4.0 sec / (100% + 45%) = 4.0 sec / 1.45 = 2.8 sec

If the Rapid Shot modal ability was turned off the character would only have the -55% recovery speed from the Brigandine and would use the formula for negative recovery speed to calculate the final recovery time:

Final Recovery Time = B * (100% - ST) = 4.0 sec * (100% - -55%) = 4.0 sec * (100% + 55%) = 4.0 sec * 1.55 = 6.2 sec

Recovery Notes & Tips

  • Negative and positive recovery time effects do not cancel each other out exactly. For example using a weapon with a base recovery speed of 5.0 sec while having -30% Recovery Time from one effect and +30% Recovery Time from another, the final recovery time is actually 4.4 sec.
  • When the game displays a number as a recovery time increase, this number is actually a negative recovery speed decrease. For example if the game displays +50% Recovery Time this is actually calculated as -50% Recovery Speed.
